The Cripta della Chiesa di Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini is located in Rome, along the famous Via Vittorio Veneto, near Piazza Barberini. This 17th-century Catholic church is renowned for its unique crypt, decorated with the bones of approximately 4,000 Capuchin friars who died between 1528 and 1870. The exterior of the church appears austere, reflecting the spirit of the mendicant monastic order, but it hides a fascinating secret beneath its floor.
The crypt is divided into five small chapels, each completely adorned with bones and skulls. The bones are used to create intricate Baroque ornaments such as rosettes, chandeliers, and even clocks. Some skeletons are dressed in brown monastic robes. One of the chapels is famous for the inscription in three languages: "We were like you, and you will become like us," highlighting the fragility of earthly life.
Inside the church, in the first chapel on the right, is a famous Baroque masterpiece: Guido Reni's painting "The Archangel Michael Trampling Satan." The church also houses a museum exhibiting personal artifacts of the order and an original Caravaggio painting.
