In short

What Palazzo Barberini is

Palazzo Barberini, located on Via delle Quattro Fontane in Rome, houses one of the city's most important art collections. This Baroque palace was built for the powerful Barberini family and is now part of the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica. Visitors can admire works by renowned artists such as Caravaggio, Raphael, El Greco, and Tintoretto, among others.

The palace itself is an architectural masterpiece, designed by Carlo Maderno and later completed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini. Among the most fascinating architectural elements are the two monumental staircases: Bernini's austere square staircase and Borromini's spiral staircase.

Inside the palace, the public can explore rooms rich with frescoes and paintings, including the famous ceiling fresco of the Divina Provvidenza by Pietro da Cortona. Other highlights include Raphael's "Fornarina" and iconic works by Caravaggio such as "Judith and Holofernes" and "Narcissus."

For those interested in architectural photography, Borromini's spiral staircase offers excellent opportunities for vertical shots. Additionally, visitors can relax on soft leather sofas to admire the frescoes without straining their necks.

Its origins

The history

Palazzo Barberini was built in the 17th century for the Barberini family. Construction began under the direction of Carlo Maderno, but after his death, the project was completed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini with the assistance of Francesco Borromini. This Baroque palace represents a symbol of the Barberini family's power and prestige, particularly after one of the brothers became Pope Urban VIII.

The palace was designed to be a unique architectural monument, and the collaboration between Bernini and Borromini led to the creation of two monumental staircases reflecting their personal styles and undeclared rivalry.
